There motorcycle for many it represents a way to escape from the boring straight line of life that flows inexorably, and then catapult you into the curves and counter-curves of a more exciting and reckless life. Those who love to ride a motorcycle also love to take care of it. It must be beautiful, damned, sparkling and above all clean! It is the imperative of every self-respecting motorcyclist. Here is a complete guide for wash the motorcycle.

How to wash the motorcycle. Pre-wash
Before washing the motorcycle, it is important to cover the exhaust terminal, the battery, the headlight vents and the air-box vents with a plastic bag. If neon, LEDs, gear counters and any post-delivery component are installed, these must also be adequately covered.

How to wash the motorcycle. Hull washing
A degreaser diluted with water is recommended only in the case of very dirty motorcycles. A neutral shampoo is generally recommended if possible ecological specific for motorcycles. Wet the motorcycle from top to bottom. In this way, dust and light dirt will slip off the surfaces, and if the bike has been in the sun, even to cool the fairings. The ecological shampoo it will not only help the environment but will also be less aggressive with the vehicle.

The shampoo should be applied without touching the fairings: the dirt on them could scratch the paint. Therefore it is advisable to use a kind of gun to paint and put the diluted shampoo in the container and then spray it on the bike in order to create a sort of foam. It is left to act for about 3 minutes and then rinse with plenty of water. However, if the shampoo tends to dry, it is better to start rinsing immediately to prevent stains or halos from forming. After rinsing, dry superficially, since it must then be rewashed, with a specific microfiber cloth for drying.

How to wash the motorcycle. Engine and chain wash
To wash the engine and chain it is not recommended to use a highly recommended product pollutant like gasoline. Maybe a degreaser is preferable ecological and a toothbrush. Spray the degreaser on the engine block and chain. Clean each part with a toothbrush / brush, then rinse and dry with a rag or better with compressed air, being careful not to blow with excessive force.

How to wash the motorcycle. Rims and wheels washing
To wash the rims you can use the same shampoo used for the fairings. A normal rim sponge is fine to lather and a cloth to dry. Both should not then be used to clean the fairings. With a tire cleaner or mild soap diluted with water, clean the side of the tire.

How to wash the motorcycle. Complete washing
Once the partial operations have been completed, we can proceed with the complete washing of the motorcycle. At this point we lather the entire surface of the bike again with a specific sponge for washing. Rinse and dry it with a good microfibre cloth. Use only the water that the bike really needs and avoid waste.

How to wash the motorcycle. Greasing
Once the bike has dried, the previously attached plastic bags can be removed. At this point, we move on to greasing with lithium soap-based grease on the front fork legs, on the shock absorber stem, on the pedal joints, on the control cables, on the wheel hub, pins, on the chain and where necessary . For rubber parts such as gaskets, brake hoses it is advisable to use silicone grease: spread on the surface and then remove it with a rag or paper.

The bike is now perfectly clean and greased. What if it has some flaws?
To proceed with a correct correction work, you need to understand what the defects are.
Swirl: they are spider web-like micro-scratches and are usually formed with incorrect washes. If they are not too marked they can be removed with a medium-light or light abrasive.

Rids: "random" scratches, ie random there is no cause, maybe a stone, a swipe, etc. To correct them, a polishing in several steps is enough, first a medium-high or medium cut paste and then finish with a lighter one. Water and limescale stains: sometimes a simple wash is enough to remove them, but sometimes you need to use a light abrasive paste.

Holograms: They are the consequence of a previous polishing done incorrectly or the consequence of using abrasive pastes with a high cut. They can be solved quite easily with a light to medium cut abrasive.

How to wash the motorcycle. Useful tips
Never forget to check the oil level, battery, coolant, tire pressure / wear, etc. Checking the radiator fluid, brake fluid and engine oil must be done with the bike perfectly straight. For washing, the use of a high-pressure cleaner and any kind of high-pressure water jet is not recommended: the use of a simple rubber or washing guns is preferred, with low-pressure and possibly adjustable jets. The pressure ofpressure washer it would be too aggressive for your bike and you would face a triple expense, you would lose electricity, water and time!

  • Using aggressive products such as degreasers too often could cause damage to the most delicate surfaces of the bike such as: gaskets, paint, unprotected plastics, aluminum and bare metal, chrome, etc.
  • Do not spray degreasers or water into electrical components, if this happens, clean and dry immediately.
  • Do not apply shampoo to brake discs.
  • When washing, make sure that the motorcycle is not exposed to the sun.
