Europe wants a third of the ecological buses by 2030, the deadline is approaching, there are just over 10 years left which is not a very long period of time considering the life cycle of these vehicles and the pace at which we change them in Italy. Almost vintage vehicles go around some of our cities. Hoping that we will meet this deadline, let's find out how the electric buses and where there are already several, in percentage.
Electric buses: how they work
When we talk about electric buses we have to think about electric cars because the operating system does not change much even if we clearly speak of very different dimensions and weights and also of transport and speed requirements that are not comparable. The system that is within the electric buses it must necessarily be more powerful and able to recover energy from the movement of the vehicle itself. Usually after about 200 kilometers, it becomes necessary to recharge the bus at the columns that are located in the stations but there is an extreme economic advantage because this recharge costs much less than petrol and is not even necessary every day.
Most electric buses move within our cities, in streets where they could not even whiz, but in any case these vehicles have been designed to be able to move exactly like other vehicles, so they are no less efficient. However, there is a big advantage in adopting them on your own streets: they are extremely quiet. They emit a very slight noise that in traffic not even heard. In Italy the transition is underway, these vehicles are already running in various cities such as Asti, Florence, Olbia, Vimercate, as well as in Milan and in many others that increase day by day, also, but not only, to respond to the indications of Europe. This replacement plan is part of a broader concept of sustainable mobility, a concept that must be at the heart of anyone who travels, for pleasure or for work.
It is a question of adopting sustainable practices when moving, in order to pollute less, choosing means of transport that are advantageous in this sense and that do not contribute to the traffic that congestes the urban and extra-urban connection routes. THE public transport in general they are certainly a correct choice but if we can also lower the environmental impact of buses, we can only gain health, both for us and for the planet.
Electric buses: what Europe says
2030, they have decisive for many environmental policies that affect us and all citizens of the European Union, is also the deadline by which we should have been able to reach a third of public electric buses. It was established by agreement between Parliament and Council of the European Union of 11 February 2019 on the revision of the Clean Vehicles Directive 2009/33 / EU, which aims to promote more ecological and energy-efficient vehicles for fleets purchased by public administrations.
There is also one intermediate step, in 2025, to dictate the timing of the transition: in just over 5 years we will already have a quarter of electric buses. Although we are talking about electric buses here, this standard also covers service vehicles such as those for waste collection and parcel delivery. The general objectives, for 2025 and 2030, are then to be calibrated on the basis of the GDP and population of the individual countries.
Electric buses: where they work
If in Italy we are working on it, in other countries electric buses they are already quite present. In Denmark in Copenhagen for 2030 they even want to reach 100% of electric vehicles that can be loaded with wi-fi columns. Electric buses are also very numerous in the Netherlands.
There Sweden it is a country that has a lot to tell. To minimize carbon dioxide emissions, the government and municipalities here have decided to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in urban transport. The companies that provide the means for local transport networks instead of snorting have rolled up their sleeves to provide the buses greener than their competitors. Gothenburg has thus become the first city in the world where only electric public buses supplied by Volvo are in operation.
Also to Stockholm 950 buses are powered by biofuels such as ethanol or biogas to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80,000 tons per year. Then there are some real experiments like the one in the city of Kista. Here a driverless bus runs for a distance of 20 kilometers, with several stops.
