The plant

They call them "mizuna broccoli" or "mizuna salad", actually it is a kind of cabbage widely grown in Japan. It cancultivatein the home garden and harvest for long periods just as you would with cutting radicchio: it grows continuously!

From a botanical point of view we are talking about the speciesBrassica campestris Nipponica, of the Brassicaceae family. This vegetable is very popular in the Far East, widely used in Japanese cuisine and, for some time, has also been noticed in our stores.

The name "mizuna broccoli”Comes from the typical inflorescence of Brassicaceae, similar to Neapolitan broccoli.

How to cook mizuna

There are many recipes useful for enjoying this vegetable.

Younger, more tender leaves have a flavor delicate, they can be used forsalad (raw) alone or for a mixed salad.

The more mature leaves must be blanched and can be used cooked in a large number of recipes. The more mature leaves have a basically spicy taste and can be used to prepare stuffing for ravioli, rustic pies, omelettes, as a filling for meat loafs or simply sautéed.

Cultivating the mizuna

Theremizunagrows well with our climate. It has jagged green leaves, its young are very light, almost white. It reaches a height of about 35 cm and to collect it, the leaves must be cut near the base. The plant should not be cut: it is a herb that grows back giving new crops.

It cancultivatefrom north to south, indeed, in the center-north the Japanese plant gives its best. It can be grown both in summer and in winter, it manages to be more productive with cultivation that goes from autumn to spring.

When to sow mizuna? In early autumn, so as to harvest until late spring.

This Japanese plant should be grown following a deep tillage. Maybe with a digging thanks to which you will have buried mature manure: it wants fertile soil rich in organic matter so as to support the different production cycles.

Its cycle ofcultivationit is annual.

When to sow?

It is sown in the open field from September to the end of October. In this context, it is harvested from late autumn to late spring.

How long from sowing to harvest? With ideal conditions, you can harvest your first harvest after 20 days. Once the leaves are cut off, the plant will quickly emit new vegetation.

If you have done a good preliminary dig, burying mature manure (compost or manure) you will not need to fertilize the soil. The plant is quite hardy, so you won't even need to do phytosanitary interventions.

The only care to be devoted to cultivationconsists in the control of weeds. Weeds can suffocate mizuna plants and for this you will need to keep the flower beds clean.

No irrigation will be required for autumn-spring cultivation. If you do acultivationIn spring, it may be necessary to water in case of prolonged drought: these plants want moderately moist soil.
