Olive fly, remedies and treatments. How to eliminate the oil fly, practical advice and effective cultivation techniques.

Bactrocera oleae

Thereolive flyBactrocera oleae, it is particularly active from September, especially when in this period the temperatures are between 23 - 27 ° C.

Therefly bite on the olivedetermines the olfactory and qualitative damage. In agriculture we speak, in fact, ofworm defectdictated by the fly larvae that dig tunnels inside the fruit to feed on the pulp.

Thereolive flycauses a lot of damage by compromising the production of olive oil. The oil produced in an olive grove attacked by the flybactocera oleaeit is poor and also poor.

Fight against the olive fly

For greater effectiveness of thefight against the olive flyit is necessary to adopt an early monitoring action. Thanks to careful monitoring, it is possible to identify the level of the fly population present in the olive grove and obtain exact information on when to perform thetreatment.

When to start monitoring?

In years characterized by mild winters, with cooler springs and summers, the monitoring ofoil flyit must be done early: already in mid-June!

When the climate sees high temperatures in summer, monitoring should be postponed to July.

How to do? Through the use of yellow chromotrophic traps (they attract flies of both sexes only with their color) and traps with pheromones (they attract only male flies).

For monitoring, I recommend the use of yellow chromotropic traps. They can be easily purchased at the most well-stocked garden centers or on Amazon where a pack of 10 traps is offered at a price of 19.50 euros with free shipping.

On the ad it says "for white fly" but in reality these traps are a lot non-specific and attract any type of fly, including oil or fruit flies.

Olive fly, adulticidal treatment

This method aims at the elimination offliesadults before they can prick the olives laying eggs. This treatment is effective if performed with careful monitoring of the olive grove.

The product must be applied in the medium-high part of the foliage, in the area most exposed to the sun and consists of a mixture of insecticide and protein bait.

Compared tolarvicidal fight, this method allows you to employ a quantity ofpesticideeven reduced by 80%.

On the other hand, adulticidal treatment must be timely: action must be taken within a few days of exceeding the infestation threshold of 1-2% and the intervention must be repeated after heavy rains which significantly reduce its effectiveness.

Olive fly, larvicidal treatment

Contrary to what has been seen with adulticide treatment, the larvicidal fight aims to destroy the larvae to prevent new infestations. The larvicidal fight can be applied to exceeding the threshold of 10-15% of infestation with dimethoate-based chemicals which, by penetrating inside the fruit, eliminate the larvae.

Eliminating the oil fly, new methods of defense

The most effective defense techniques are those that involve a plan capable of integrating multiple means offight. It is not enough to perform a larvicidal or adulticidal treatment. To contain the populations of olive fly it is necessary to associate thetreatmentlarvicidal with adulticidal. In addition it would be advisable to continue with treatmentsrepellentsbased on copper or kaolin.

Olive fly, biological control and natural remedies

Who wants to rely onnatural remediescan rely on the so-calledbiological struggleor choose those products allowed in organic farming.

By relying on the organic method you can exploit themass capturewith traps containing specific food attractants associated with a contact insecticide. In this case, the classic "olive fly bait"“Attract and kill“.

Alternatively, the biological method involves the use of copper salts by exploiting their indirect parasite control activity. As the problem ofolive fly new products that can be used in organic farming have been registered, these are Beauveria bassiana and Spinosad.

There biological struggle seems not to be very effective: in an experimental setting with launches of Opius concolor, no exciting results were recorded mainly due to the high costs. Other evidence of biological control were performed with the antagonist Bacillus thuringiensis, which however fails when the larva has already reached depth.

Trap for oil fly

The adhesive trap with yellow sheets (chromotropic trap) is useful in monitoring but, on its own, is ineffective in olive groves.

It can be useful in small family olive groves to limit the population growth ofoil flies. A good number oftrapsand replace them periodically.

The chromotropic trap can be combined with the classic onetrap with bait. If with the adhesive sheets it is the yellow color that attracts the olive fly, with the trap with bait you will have to prepare a special concoction.

You can prepare a DIY trap or take advantage of the ready-made hook caps. A set of 9 traps on Amazon can be bought for 9 euros with free shipping.

You will need 9 plastic bottles to fill, halfway, with a protein liquid or with: water and beer, water and anchovy, water and fish waste ... so as to make a perfect bait!
