Making a solar collector to produce domestic hot water is not difficult. Using certified materials you can also benefit from the personal income tax deductions for the expenses incurred. Below we will show you how to build a solar collector following our instructions.

DIY solar collector, the procedure

  • For the dimensions of the solar panel it is sufficient to have as a reference those that are on the market, therefore about one meter wide and about 2 meters long
  • As an absorbing surface we can use a copper plate or a black painted sheet, among other things the most economical solution
  • For the coil, we need a copper pipe dn 14 or dn 16 unrolled on the sheet.
  • To unroll the copper coil we will use the pipe bender
  • To fix the coil to the plate, we need to drill the plate in several places to fix the coil, using tightly woven wire or clamps. This is a necessary step to more easily weld the coil to the plate: the number of welding points depends on the dimensions and weight of the elements.
  • Let's make sure that there is as much adhesion as possible of the coil on the sheet in order to have a better final performance of the panel
  • Once this is done, we pass a coat of black paint over the entire surface of the panel, including the coil: in this way, the welding points will be covered, which can be unsightly.
  • Take the wooden box and place an insulating underlay that can be made of glass wool, for example, then lay the solar collector: the bottom can also be made of plywood, the side edges must be high to contain the slab with the welded panel. In addition, two holes must be made in the side structure of the box to allow the heads of the copper coil to exit.
  • Finally, we connect a pipe between the copper coil and the boiler connected to the DHW distribution system (domestic hot water).

Useful information: temperatures could reach dangerous values ​​for any connections and or pipes made of plastic or similar material, especially if the system has no possibility of exchanging the stored energy, that is, in the case of an empty boiler
